How a Form I-20 is created?

Minnesota State Mankato collects necessary financial support and identification documentation for admitted international students requesting F-1 status. After Admission, students are required to complete the I-20 Request form for New Students. Once the request has been made, the students name and biographic information are entered into a U.S. government database called SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System). SEVIS processes the information and produces an I-20. The school official (called the Designated School Official or DSO) prints and signs the I-20 and then delivers it to the student.*  If a student needs to update or change information on their I-20, the DSO makes these requests through SEVIS to produce a new document.

* As of March 2020, The SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) has temporarily authorized schools to send I-20 documents electronically during the COVID-19 emergency and your I-20 will be sent only to your email address that we have on file.
