Student Privacy Rights and FERPA Information
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects your education records and gives you certain privacy rights. Minnesota State University, Mankato follows FERPA and Minnesota state data privacy regulations. Student information is only shared when permitted by law or when there is a legitimate educational need.
Update Your Personal Information
You can update some information, such as your address and phone number, through E-Services. Other changes must be submitted through the Personal Data Change Form.
Directory Information and Limited Directory Information
To understand what is considered directory and limited directory information, please review the Student Educational Records Policy.
Keep My Information Private
You may request that your Directory Information not be released by completing a Student Data Privacy Request. A privacy hold remains in effect until you remove it.

As a student, you have the right to:
Review Your Records
Request access to your education records. The University will respond within 45 days of receiving a written request. Please see the Student Educational Records Policy for how to access your records.
Request a Record Correction
Ask the University to correct information you believe is inaccurate or misleading. If the request is denied, you may request a hearing.
Control Disclosure of Information
Provide consent before personally identifiable information is shared, except in situations allowed by FERPA, such as when University officials have a legitimate educational interest.
Receive Disclosure Information
Request information about records shared with another educational institution and seek correction of inaccurate information.
File a FERPA Complaint
If you believe your FERPA rights have been violated, you may file a complaint with:
