Slow Speed Using VPN

Summary

Explains how to troubleshoot slow VPN performance by checking internet speed, aiming for at least 12 Mbps, and considering WorkMSU or disabling IPv6 on Macs if needed.

Body

Issue Description

Users may experience slow internet speeds when connected to the VPN.

Possible Causes

  • Slow VPN performance is most often caused by a slow home or local internet connection.
  • A minimum internet speed of 12 Mbps is recommended for reliable VPN use.

Resolution

To improve VPN performance:

  1. Run a network speed test using one of the following tools:

    • SpeedTest.net

    • SpeedOf.me

  2. Confirm that your internet speed is greater than 12 Mbps.

  3. Consider using WorkMSU instead of VPN.

    • WorkMSU uses a remote desktop connection, meaning only keyboard, video, and mouse data travel between your device and campus.

    • All software runs on campus servers, which can improve performance on slower home networks.

Additional Notes

  • Some Mac computers may experience slow VPN performance if IPv6 is enabled.
