Overview
This outlines the different Transfer of Credit Appeal options for students who have already completed the Transfer of Credit review process.
Transfer Credit Appeal Options
All students with transfer credit go the Transfer Credit Review Process:
- Course Review: Transfer courses are checked to see if they match general education or previously approved courses.
- Department Review (if needed): If the course hasn’t been reviewed before, it will be sent to the appropriate department. Note: This may take up to 30 days.
- Notification: Students get an email from MSU once the review is complete.
After the review process has concluded, the transfer appeal options are below. Students would only complete either option 1 or option 2, they would not complete both.
1. Standard Transfer Appeal (via E-Services) - Used by current students to appeal a course after initial evaluation is complete.
- Before Appealing: Meet with your academic advisor. Try other options first, like course substitutions or equivalency requests.
- Prepare Documentation: You may need to upload a syllabus, course learning outcomes or other documents.
- Submit Appeal in E-Services. Go to Academic Records and choose Transfer Review.
- Wait for Review: You’ll be contacted if more info is needed or once a decision is made. Note: This process can take up to 30 days.
- If Denied: You can appeal through the Minnesota State system but only after the local (university-level) appeal is done.
2. General Education, Diverse Cultures, or Writing Intensive Appeal -Used by current students appealing course placement in General Education, Diverse Cultures and/or Writing Intensive requirements.
- Complete the appeal in E-Services or use the special form for this type of appeal. Only submit one appeal, do not submit both.
- Submit required documents (e.g., syllabus, letters of support, signatures, learning outcomes).
- Wait to be contacted or notified of a decision. This may also take up to 30 days.
Important: Courses from the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) follow the goal area assigned by the original school. Local changes to this will not be approved.
