Adding Start, End, and Due Dates to Quizzes in D2L Brightspace

Overview

This article explains how Start Dates, End Dates, and Due Dates work in D2L Brightspace quizzes and how instructors can add or modify these dates. These settings control when students can see, access, and submit quizzes.

Understanding the differences between these dates helps instructors manage quiz availability while clearly communicating expectations to students.

Start, End, and Due Dates

The Start, End and Due dates are used in quizzes to modify when students will be able to see the quizzes, access the quiz, and the amount of time it is open for.

• Start Date: When the quiz will be available for students to take. Restricts availability. Students can see the Quiz, Instructions, and Details, but cannot start an attempt before the Start Date.
• End Date: The student can no longer access the quiz at the End date/time set. Restricts availability. Students can see the Quiz, Instructions, and Details, but cannot start an attempt after the End Date.
• Due Date: The deadline for submitting the quiz. Does not restrict availability. Students are able to start and submit an attempt after the Due Date however it will be marked late for instructors and students.

Note: The End Date only restricts the student from starting a quiz attempt, it does not impact quiz timing. See the D2L Brightspace: Time Limits on Quizzes for additional detail.

To add Dates to a D2L Brightspace quiz:

Set Due Dates

1. Edit the quiz that needs start, end and due dates.
2. Once the quiz opens up, select the text box under the Due Date and choose the preferred time and date.

Set Start and End Dates

1. When editing the Quiz, select Availability Dates & Conditions menu on the right hand of the screen.
2. Select the Start Date box to set the start date for the quiz by choosing the date and time you would like to students to be able to access the quiz.
3. To add an End Date to the quiz, select the End date box and choose your preferred date and time.
4. Click Save and Close.

Once you save and close the quiz, check the changes are complete. In the quiz list page, if you scroll to the quiz, the Start, Due, and End Dates are be displayed below the Quiz title.
