Using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Without a Mobile Device: USB Security Keys

Summary

Learn about compatible USB security keys as an alternative to mobile MFA, including model options and purchasing information for students, faculty, and staff.

Body

Overview

A compatible USB security key provides an alternative to using the Microsoft Authenticator app on a mobile device for multi-factor authentication (MFA) with your Minnesota State Microsoft 365 account.

This option is available to:

  • Students who do not have a mobile device that can run Microsoft Authenticator.
  • Faculty and staff who do not have a compatible mobile device or prefer not to use their personal mobile device for MFA.

A USB security key is a physical device that plugs into your computer’s USB port to verify your identity when signing in.

Compatible USB Security Keys

Important: Only the two models listed below are compatible with our system. Not all USB security keys on the market will work. Before purchasing or using a key, confirm that it is one of these models and is the Bio - FIDO Edition.

Check your computer’s USB ports before ordering. If your computer has a USB-C port, choose the USB-C model - it is the preferred option.

Purchasing a USB Security Key

Students: If you do not have a mobile device that can run Microsoft Authenticator, you must purchase a compatible USB security key at your own expense.

Faculty and staff: You may purchase a compatible USB security key online or request one through ITS procurement and charge it to your department’s cost center. IT Solutions keeps a limited supply on hand for faster fulfillment through procurement, subject to availability.
