How do I reset my StarID password?
Overview
If you do not know your password, or your password is not working:
- Visit the website https://starid.minnstate.edu/
- Select Reset Password
- Select one of the options on the next page (Tech ID, Email Address...)
- Enter the requested information that may vary depending upon which option you selected in the previous step.
Note: (If you don' t know your StarID, select Activate Your StarID).
Tech ID
- Enter your Tech ID and College / University in the designated boxes and click Continue
- Enter your Social Security Number and select Continue
- If you have previously setup security questions, please enter your answers, or continue to the next step if you haven’t
Note: If you do not remember your security questions or the answers are failing for the security questions, please contact the IT Solutions Center. Please be ready with a government issued ID or MavCARD to verify your identity.
- Enter your New Password and Confirm New Password
- Select a preferred email for notifications, read the Acceptable Use Policy and place a checkmark in the box if you agree to it, and click Set Password
Note: If you do not know your Tech ID, you can find it on the front of your MavCARD. Or contact IT Solutions Center, 507-389-6654, or chat.
Email Address
- Enter your personal email address (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo) that was specified in your application for admission and click Continue to receive a verification code.
Note: If your password has expired, do not enter your "@mnsu.edu" email address as you will not be able to access the email, you will need to use the TechID option.
- Once you receive the email, locate the verification code, and copy it into the designated box on the Self-Service webpage page.
Note: If you do not have a personal email address on file or don’t receive a code, please visit the Registration and Academic Records (Registrar’s Office) Help Desk located on the first floor of the Wigley Administration building for assistance in adding or changing the email address associated with your account.
- Enter your last name or email address that you used in the corresponding box and click continue.
- If you have previously set up security questions, please enter your answers, otherwise continue to the next step.

- Enter your New Password and Confirm New Password.

State ID
- Click I know my state employee number (8 digits).
- Enter your state employee number and College / University in the designated boxes and click Continue.
- Enter your Social Security Number in the designated box and click Continue.
- If you have previously set up security questions, please enter your answers, otherwise, continue to the next step.
Note: If you do not remember or the answers are failing for the security questions, please contact the IT Solution Center. Please be ready with a government issued ID or MavCARD to verify your identity.
- Enter your New Password and Confirm New Password.
- Select a preferred email for notifications, read the Acceptable Use Policy and place a checkmark in the box if you agree to it, and click Set Password.
If you know your password:
- Visit the website https://starid.minnstate.edu/
- From the StarID Self Service page, click Sign into Profile and sign in with your current StarID password.
- Enter your old password and new password into the text boxes.
- Select the Apply button in the Change Password section.
Please be aware that passwords must follow the following guidelines:
- At least 8 characters long
- Contain no part of your name
- May not have previously been used
- Must include at least 3 of the following 4:
- Special Characters
- Numbers
- Lower Case Letters
- Upper Case Letters
