Description
Microsoft Copilot is an advanced generative AI assistant and chat bot in Microsoft 365 (similar to ChatGPT) designed to enhance productivity. It leverages the power of AI to assist users with tasks such as researching topics, creating content, data analysis, content creation, generating reports, summarizing documents, providing insights, and more. Copilot the official approved AI chat tool at Minnesota State University, Mankato and meets data security and privacy requirements.
Recent Updates
April 15, 2026: Microsoft has removed the free, in-app Copilot sidebar from desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for users. Free Copilot Chat remains available in the "New Outlook" when composing emails.
How to Access
Faculty, staff, and students have free access to Copilot Chat. Additional tools and features may be paid for or can be requested. Always log in with your University account to ensure you are using Copilot in the secured environment. Do not input sensitive or private data into Copilot.

Key Features
- Data Security: When signed in to your University account, data remains within our secure environment, meaning nothing is shared outside of Minnesota State or used to train other bots.
- Brainstorm and Generate Ideas: Generate ideas, outlines, and creative approaches for projects or problems.
- Create and Edit Content: Draft, rewrite, and improve emails, documents, and other written content.
- Generate Images: Create photos, graphics, and other visuals from a prompt.
- Summarize and Explain: Condense long content and explain complex topics in simple terms.
- Research: Find information, explore topics, and generate insights from multiple sources. Choose from conversation modes including Quick, Think Deeper, and Deep Research.
- Analyze Data: Interpret data, answer questions, create reports, and surface trends or key takeaways.
- Integrate with Microsft 365 Apps (Paid Feature): M365 Copilot (Premium) is paid option that integrates AI-powered features directly into Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft 365 apps to assist with writing, data analysis, email responses, and productivity tasks.
- Build Agents (Request Required): Copilot Studio is a free tool available by request for creating and managing custom AI chatbots and automation workflows.
