Overview

Minnesota State and Minnesota State University, Mankato are committed to supporting students who are veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and military-connected students. The policies and procedures below address topics such as veteran status recognition, military-related residency requirements, credit for prior learning, disability accommodations, enrollment protections, and military training evaluation. 

Military and Veteran Student Policy Resources

This list highlights some of the most commonly referenced system wide and university policies. While it does not include Minnesota State Statutes, many of the policies and procedures below reference applicable state and federal laws. 

Minnstate Policy and Procedures 

Board Policy 3.40 – Recognition of Veteran Status and Active Service Member Status  

Defines veteran and active service member status within the Minnesota State system and outlines related institutional responsibilities. 

Board Policy 3.35 – Credit for Prior Learning 

Establishes opportunities for students to earn academic credit for learning acquired through military training, occupational experience, certifications, and other prior learning experiences.

Veteran Participation in Courses Pending VA Payment 

Provides protections for students using VA education benefits while benefit payments are pending. 

Priority Registration 

Allows eligible veterans and military-connected students to access priority course registration. 

Credit for Prior Learning for Undergraduate Students 

Details the university process for evaluating prior learning, including military training and experience, for academic credit.
