Connecting to eduroam Wi-Fi with Chromebook (Chrome OS)

Overview

eduroam is the preferred secure Wi-Fi network for all students, faculty and staff to use with their personally owned devices. Enroll your device to enjoy Wi-Fi access throughout this campus as well as other eduroam-participating institutions. To connect to eduroam, you must have an active StarID account, a data or internet connection.

Environment

This article applies to:

  • Personal Devices: Equipment owned and maintained by individual users. 

Note: If this article specifies "State-Owned Devices," the steps, tools, or solutions may not work on personal devices due to administrative restrictions or licensing requirements.   

How-To

Note: When setting up the eduroam Wi-Fi network you need to have a network connection. We suggest connecting to the MavGUEST network or complete this setup at another off-campus location where you have Wi-Fi or other network access.

Directions and screen shots may differ depending on software versions

  1. Open the Chrome OS Settings App > Network > Wi-Fi > Known Networks. If "eduroam" exists, click eduroam and then click forget.
  2. Open wifi.mnsu.edu
  3. If the option listed is to "Install", proceed with installing the Chrome extension in #4. If the option listed is to Sign In, proceed to #6
  4. Install the Chrome extension:
    1. You should now see a window indicating that JoinNow MultiOS has been added to Chrome.
    2. A new tab will open and offer you the option to add the JoinNow MultiOS extension. Click Add to Chrome. If asked "Add JoinNow MultiOS," click Add extension.
    3. Close the JoinNow MultiOS - Chrome Web Store tab.
  5. On the Minnesota State University, Mankato eduroam Wi-Fi Configuration screen, click Sign In
  6. Sign In
    1. If you are a student enter: yourstarid@go.minnstate.edu
    2. If you are an employee: yourstarid@minnstate.edu
  7. Click "Download." A file named "SecureW2.onc" will download.   8. Click on the "Network" tab and scroll to bottom of page. There is an item called "Import ONC File". Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  9. Click "Import ONC File". Select the "SecureW2.onc" file in the Download folder and click "Open. It should say "Networks imported: 1" at the bottom of the page. If you receive an error indicating "Server cetificate with hash...already in cert store," the certificate had been previously loaded and you should proceed.Downloads folder with SecureW2.onc selected and the Open button highlighted.
  10. Click the Wi-Fi menu in the bottom of the system tray and connect to "eduroam". It will open a dialog called "Join Wi-Fi network"Chromebook Wi-Fi menu with eduroam highlighted under Known networks.eduroam Wi-Fi settings showing EAP-TLS selected, with the Connect button at the bottom.
  11. Scroll to the bottom of this window and find input field called "Identity". It likely contains "yourstarid@go.minnstate.edu".
  12. Change the value in the "Identity" field to be eduroam@mnsu.edu instead of starid@go.minnstate.edu
  13. Click "Connect". It should connect to eduroam.eduroam Wi-Fi settings with eduroam@mnsu.edu entered in the Identity field and the Connect button below.
  14. Navigate to Network Settings > Wi-Fi > eduroamChromebook Wi-Fi menu showing eduroam connected, with the Network settings gear highlighted.
  15. Enable "Prefer this network"

Outcome

Your Chromebook device is now set up to use eduroam. It will work wherever you are throughout the world that an eduroam network is available if you are a current student or employee at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Changing your StarID password will not require any Wi-Fi related updates on your Chromebook device.
