Checking the Display and Locking Statuses for D2L Brightspace Discussion Topics/Forums

Overview

This article explains why students might not be able to see discussion forums or topics in D2L Brightspace. It highlights that visibility issues often result from availability settings or locking (start/end date) restrictions and provides steps to check and adjust these settings.

How-To

If students report that they cannot see a Discussion Forum or Topic, sometimes this is due to Availability or Locking(Start/End Date) restrictions.

Check the display/locking statuses for each discussion topic and the forum that it lies in.

  1. Click Discussions under the Communication drop-down menu
  2. Find the Discussions topic/forum that is not displaying to students
  3. Click the drop-down arrow next to the name of that topic/forum
  4. Click Edit Topic
  5. In the Properties tab, under the Availability headingcheck to make sure this option has Forum/Topic is always visible selected
  6. Under the Locking Options headingchoose how to lock the topic/forum from student submission

By reviewing and updating the display and locking statuses of discussion forums and topics, instructors can ensure that students have proper access, allowing full participation in course discussions.
