Installing and Running the Cisco VPN for Windows

Question

How do I setup the VPN client? How do I connect to MavDISK or MavPRINT from off campus?

Overview

You can connect to the Virtual Private Network (VPN) client software using your StarID on both a Windows computer and a Mac. The VPN client is used to allow your computer to do tasks off campus that would usually require you to be on campus. Examples of this include but are not limited to the following:

  • Connect to MavPRINT
  • Connect to MavAPPs
  • Map a network drive (MavDISK)
  • Connect to Krypton
  • Access ISRS (Uniface)
  • And more

Installing the Cisco AnyConnect Client:

  1. Click on the Start button (windows flag icon) in the lower left corner.
  2. Type Software Center as this should search your computer.  If it locates it click on Software Center.
  3. Try and locate Cisco AnyConnect VPN under Applications to install and if you locate it and install it.
  4. If Cisco AnyConnect is not available in Software Center under Applications, please proceed to the next section labeled Personal computer or not showing up in Software Center on a MSU device.

  1. In a web browser navigate to https://vpn.mnsu.edu.
  2. Enter your starid and password and click on Login.

  3. On the left hand side, click on AnyConnect.

  4. In the middle of the screen, click on Start AnyConnect.

  5. Click on Download for Windows.  
    • Tip: for detailed instructions for your operating system, click the Instructions button and scroll down.

  6. Go to the location your browser downloads items to and locate and double-click on the anyconnect-win-<version>-core-vpn-webdeploy-k9.exe.
  7. This should launch the install and you should see the window below.  Click on Next.
  8. Click the bubble next to I accept the terms in the License Agreement and click on Next.

  9. Click on Install.

  10. Depending on your security settings you will probably get a User Account Control window.  Click on Yes to start the installation.

  11. Once the install has completed, click on Finish.

Running the Cisco AnyConnect Client:

  1. Click on the Start button (windows flag icon) in the lower left corner.
  2. Type Cisco as this should search your computer and click on Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client to run it.
    • Note:  If you want to make it easier to find you can click on Pin to Start.

  3. If this is the first time launching the Cisco AnyConnect you will need to enter vpn.mnsu.edu in the box and click on Connect.
    • Note:  After the first time connecting the Cisco AnyConnect will remmeber the server you connected to last and you will just need to click on Connect..

  4. Enter your StarID and password and click on OK.

  5. To check if you are connected or to disconnect click on the ^ located near the clock and then click on the Cisco icon to open Cisco AnyConnect.

  6. You should see that you are connected to vpn.mnsu.edu and if you want to disconnect you just need to click on Disconnect.
