Connecting Smart Devices to Wi-Fi

Question

How can I connect my Amazon Alexa, gaming console, or other smart device to the Wi-Fi on campus?

Overview

Many smart devices and gaming consoles are not designed to connect to enterprise Wi-Fi networks like eduroam, which require both a username and password for authentication. Instead, these devices often rely on a single pre-shared key (PSK) or password, which eduroam does not support.

The university provides an option to request a device connection for approved smart devices and gaming consoles that cannot connect to eduroam.

Devices That Cannot Connect to eduroam

The following types of devices typically cannot connect to the standard eduroam Wi-Fi network due to authentication limitations:

  • Smart Assistants and Speakers (e.g., Amazon Alexa, Google Nest, Apple HomePod)
  • Streaming Devices (e.g., Roku, Chromecast, Fire Stick, Apple TV [some models])
  • Gaming Consoles (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch [wireless only])
  • Virtual Reality (VR) Headsets (e.g., Meta Quest, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR)
  • Other Smart Devices (e.g., Smart TVs, smart light bulbs, smart plugs)

This is not a comprehensive list. Some devices may work, while others may experience connectivity issues due to the authentication requirements of eduroam.

If your device requires a single password (PSK) for authentication, it will not work on eduroam.

How to Connect Your Device

1. Request a Device Connection

  • The university provides an option to connect devices that cannot authenticate on eduroam. To request access:
  • Submit a ticket to IT Solutions with the following details:
    • Device type (e.g., PlayStation, Roku, Alexa)
    • Reason for needing the device connected
    • Device location (e.g., classroom room number, office, or lab location)
  • Once reviewed, IT Solutions will provide setup instructions or assist with connecting your device to the network.
  • If you are a student and your device is located in a residence hall, see these connection instructions

2. Use a Wired Ethernet Connection (Recommended for Consoles and Smart TVs)

  • Some devices, such as gaming consoles and smart TVs, may work with a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi.
