Email Access After Leaving Minnesota State University, Mankato

Overview

This article outlines what happens to MavMAIL email access when students or employees leave Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU).

Departing Students

  • Withdrawal or Transfer to schools not in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MinnState) system: Limited MavMAIL access remains for up to 60 days after the last day of attendance.

  • Transfer to schools within the MinnState system: Email access continues uninterrupted while attending another MinnState institution.

  • Incomplete Coursework: Students completing coursework under an incomplete grade retain their accounts for up to 2 years.

  • Graduates: Alumni retain MavMAIL access indefinitely. We recommend logging in periodically and updating your StarID password to keep quick access to your account if needed. 

    • There may be a delay of a few days to a few weeks after graduation when you are unable to access your account. This is due to your status changing from a student to an alumnus. If you need email access during this time, please submit a ticket to IT Solutions, and we will manually grant you access.

Departing Employees

Staff

  • Voluntary Departure or Termination: Accounts are disabled immediately on the day of departure; email access ends at that time.

  • Medical Leave or Extended Absence: Accounts may be temporarily deactivated until the employee returns.

Faculty

  • Sabbatical: Email access is retained.

  • Not Teaching or On Break: Email access continues for up to 270 days.

  • Termination: Email access is immediately revoked.

Emeriti

  • Receive a new email address ending with go.minnstate.edu when receiving emeritus status and retain access for life. 

  • Access to their staff account ends the day of employment. Emails stored in that address are not retained or carried over to the new email address.
