D2L Brightspace: Adding questions to the Question Library

Question

How to add questions to the Question Library?

Overview

What is the Question Library?

The Question Library in Quizzes allows you to store Quiz questions for easy reuse within a course.

How can I use the Question Library?

As a best practice for storage, organization, and easy access, we recommend that you create all your questions using the Question Library. You can also add questions created within the Quizzes tool by importing them back into the Question Library.

Add Sections to the Question Library

As a best practice, it is recommended to create a section in the Question Library, then add quiz questions to this section. This will make it easier to select the questions to add to a quiz, especially if the questions will be randomized.

  1. Go to the Quizzes area.
  2. The Manage Quizzes page will open. Select Question Library.
  3. Select New.
  4. Select Section
  5. The New Section page will open. Enter a name for the section in the "Section Name" field.
  6. Select Save
  7. The Question Library page will appear again, and the new section will appear in its list of items.

Add Questions to the Question Library

There are 12 question types in D2L (multiple-choice, written response, etc.), and the process for building each question type is slightly different. This section provides an overview of the process.

  1. Go to the Quizzes area.
  2. The Manage Quizzes page will open. Select Question Library.
  3. Select the section to which to add questions.
  4. Select New.
  5. Use the dropdown menu to select the question type to add.
  6. Fill out all required fields for the question type (such as different answer options) and any Optional fields:
    • The “Question Text” field is required. This is what is displayed to students.
    • A point value is required for all questions. The default is 1 point.
    • All questions can be named with the optional "Title" field or by selecting Options and Add a Short Description from the drop-down menu. If a title or description is not entered, the system will use the full question text as the title. The title or description is never displayed to students.
    • “Weight” refers to what percent credit a student will receive for selecting an answer. Some questions will automate a weight for the question, while others will need to be specified. The weight of some questions can be customized for partial credit by selecting Options and then Add Custom Weights from the drop-down menu.
    • The "Feedback" field gives information to students who select that answer. They will only be able to see it after they have submitted their answers to the quiz. Feedback can be added in the "Feedback" field next to the question or by selecting Options and Add Feedback, depending on the question type.
    • Text entered in the "Question Hints" field or by selecting Add Hint from the Options drop-down menu can be viewed by students as they are answering the question.
  7. When finished creating the question choose from the following options:
    • Select Save to return to the main Question Library page.
    • Select Save and Copy by expanding the drop-down arrow next to Save to save the question and create a new question of the same type that retains the current properties.
    • Select Save and New by expanding the drop-down arrow next to Save to save the question and to continue creating questions of the same type.
