Overview
This article provides step-by-step instructions for faculty on how to enable Respondus Monitor (online proctoring) for quizzes in D2L Brightspace. Respondus Monitor works with LockDown Browser to provide automated proctoring for online exams.
How-to
To set-up Respondus Monitor:
- Navigate to Quizzes in your D2L Brightspace course.
- Click the LockDown Browser tab
- You will see a LockDown Browser start page, click Continue to LockDown Browser.
Note: Sometimes it takes several minutes for this page to load. Wait 5 minutes and refresh the page if it still does not load.
- Click the arrow next to the Quiz you wish to set-up LockDown Browser in.

- Click Settings from the menu.
- Select Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.
- Under Proctoring, Select Require Respondus Monitor (automated proctoring) for this exam
- Select the Startup Sequence steps you’d like to use.
- Uncheck the box next to Environment Check to remove the room scan from the Startup Sequence.
Note: Current University guidance from the Office of the Provost states, “Remote proctoring of exams is permitted, but please do not scan rooms. A federal judge has ruled that room scanning during remote proctoring of exams is unconstitutional and a violation of student privacy”

- Select the Face Detection Options you’d like to use.
- You can choose to select even more settings by clicking the plus sign next to Advanced Settings.
- Click the Save + Close button.
Outcome
After completing these steps, the selected quiz will require Respondus Monitor for online proctoring and will be configured according to university guidelines.
