Troubleshooting Password Reset Errors Related to Password Writeback

 

Overview

Why am I getting the following error when I try and reset my password:

You can’t reset your own password because password writeback, how your password changes in the cloud are copied to your organization’s on-premises system, isn’t turned on for your organization.

You must contact your administrator to both reset your password and to check your organization’s setup.

How-To

This error message is caused by using the Can't access your account? link when signing into email or another M365 service.  There is an image below on the screen that has the link that causes this.  This feature isn't setup for Microsoft 365 for MSU, Mankato and Minnstate.  Please use the the StarID Portal to reset your StarID password, which you can get directions and the link by view our knowledge article on password resets.
