This article is for students, employees, and other users at Minnesota State University, Mankato who need to understand what a StarID account is.

StarID Accounts

Basic Information

  • A StarID is a unique username assigned to every student and employee across all institutions within the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.
  • StarID accounts provide access to key university services and tools. Keep StarID information, including your password, secure.
  • StarIDs are automatically created by the Minnesota State System Office for all current employees, enrolled students, students enrolled in an orientation session, degree awarded alumni, and emeritus staff.
    • For special users, StarID accounts must be requested from IT Solutions, including MavCard and email access. This includes accounts for vendors, contractors, student worker employee accounts, and other affiliated cohorts such as bank employees, bookstore employees, CE teachers, consultants, dining services employees, Military Science/ROTC, Otto Rec employees, religious institutions, RSO advisors, TOSA, or visiting scholars.
  • If you are using your StarID for the first time or do not have a password, you must activate your StarID and create a password before logging in using the StarID self service portal.

Where StarIDs Are Used

Your StarID is used to log in to most Minnesota State Mankato services, including:

  • Campus Wi-Fi
  • Classroom, public lab, and kiosk computers
  • D2L Brightspace
  • E-Services
  • Financial Aid Portal
  • MavCONNECT
  • MavMail
  • Microsoft 365
  • New Student Enrollment Confirmation
  • New Student Orientation Registration
  • Scholarship Finder

FAQ

Where do I get support for StarID issues?

The IT Solutions Center can provide support for StarID issues at Minnesota State University, Mankato. For self-help, including activating your StarID, resetting your password, and other general information, vist the StarID self service portal

How do I know what my StarID is?

If you don't know your StarID, you can look it up on the StarID self service portal.

How do I reset my StarID password?

You can reset your StarID password on your own using the StarID self service portal. If you continue to experience issues, contact the IT Solutions Center.

My StarID is incorrect or I have more than one account.

Individuals must only have one StarID. If two or more were accidentally issued to the same individual within the Minnesota State system, the duplication can be resolved by contacting IT Solutions. Note that students who are also employees, and employees that are also students, may have two different methods to log in with the same StarID.

What is multi-factor authentication?

In order to better protect you, your data, and our campus network from security threats, multi-factor authentication for your Microsoft 365 account is required for all Minnesota State University, Mankato users. When you sign into your Microsoft 365 account using your StarID information, you'll be required to use a second verification method. 

What's the difference between a StarID and Tech ID?

A StarID is a unique username used to log into many University systems and tools. If you need to know your StarID, you can look it up on the StarID self service portal.

A Tech ID (sometimes referred to as a "student ID") is an eight-digit number that identifies a person's record in ISRS, the main record system used by Minnesota State. If you need to know your Tech ID, this is listed in E-services. Students can also get their Tech ID from student support staff at their school. College or university HR offices can also provide employees with their Tech ID.
