Overview
This article provides instructions to install Microsoft 365 apps on a personal computer (Windows and macOS) or mobile device (Android and iOS). Current students, faculty, and staff can install Microsoft 365 at no charge on up to five different personal devices, plus mobile apps.
Environment
Personal Devices: Equipment owned and maintained by individual users.
Note: Microsoft 365 is already installed on university owned computers, including employee computers and campus computer labs.
How-To
Install Microsoft 365 on a Computer
Step 1 - Open a web browser and log in to MavMAIL with your university account.
Login information
- Student username: StarID@go.minnstate.edu
- Employee username: StarID@minnstate.edu
- Password: Your StarID
Step 2 - Go to the Microsoft apps page. You can also get there by clicking the App Launcher in the top left corner of MavMAIL and selecting More apps.
Step 3 - Click Install apps in the top right corner, then select the Microsoft 365 apps option.
Step 4 - Under the Office apps & devices section, click Install office. This will download the installer for Windows and macOS.
Step 5 - Find and open the installer/setup file that was downloaded. It will most likely be in the Downloads folder.
Step 6 - If prompted, click Yes to allow Microsoft 365 to install. Installation may take several minutes.
Step 7 - Once installed, Microsoft 365 apps will be available on the computer. On Windows, search for them in the Start menu. On Mac, search for them in Finder.
Step 8 - Open the apps on the computer and log in with your university account.

Install Microsoft 365 on a Mobile Device
Microsoft 365 apps are available for Android and iOS devices. They must be individually installed.
Step 1 - Open the App Store or Google Play Store on the mobile device.
Step 2 - Search for individual Microsoft apps. For example, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Outlook, and others.
Step 3 - Select the apps you want and click Install.
Step 4 - Open the apps on the device and log in with your university account.

FAQ
Do alumni and emeriti get access to Microsoft 365?
Alumni and emeriti are not able to download Microsoft 365, but can access the web apps up until two years after departing the university. After that, the license will expire and apps will no longer be available except for the web version of MavMAIL.
I got a pop-up message indicating that the Click-to-Run installer encountered a problem.
If you get a pop-up message indicating the Click-to-Run installer encountered a problem because you have Windows Installer based Office programs installed on your computer, you may need to un-install the older version of Microsoft Office on your computer. Click the Go online for additional help link at the bottom of the pop-up for more information about and how to resolve the error. Or, contact the IT Solutions Center for support.
Outcome
Microsoft 365 will be installed on the device.
