Changing Your Options for Multi-Factor Authentication

Overview

In the event that the method originally set up for multi-factor authentication needs to be changed, there is a process to do so. As long as the Microsoft account can still be accessed, this can be completed following the steps provided. If the account is not able to be accessed due to the current method of authentication not being an option, such as in the case of a lost or damaged phone, then a multi-factor authentication reset will be required which the IT Solution Center can help with.

How-To

To change your multi-factor authentication (MFA) options follow the steps below:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Navigate to "My sign-ins" and then select "Security info".
  3. Select "Add a new method" to add a new MFA option, or "Change" next to the existing method you want to modify.
  4. Choose your desired MFA option like a phone number, authenticator app, or security key.
  5. Complete the necessary verification steps to update your MFA settings

Outcome

Once the steps above are completed, the multi-factor authentication method should have changed to the method that was selected.
